Operation Safe & Sober brings life-saving lessons to East Lake High and the community

East Lake High School hosted Operation Safe & Sober to give students a powerful demonstration and realistic look at the consequences of driving under the influence.
During the event, a live simulation recreated a serious head-on motor vehicle crash caused by impaired driving, with East Lake students acting in various roles. The demonstration featured a coordinated emergency response from East Lake Fire Rescue, Sunstar Ambulance, AeroMed, and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Students observed how first responders manage a critical accident scene, including emergency medical care, vehicle extrication, and law enforcement investigation.
The goal of the demonstration is to educate juniors and seniors about the very real dangers and life-altering consequences of impaired driving, encouraging them to make safe and responsible choices behind the wheel.
“Every year across the country, lives are lost because of impaired or distracted driving,” said East Lake Fire Chief Jason Gennaro. “These tragedies affect not only the victims but also families, friends, classmates, and entire communities. The good news is that these incidents are preventable when responsible choices are made.”
East Lake High School Principal Dr. Eric C. Smith also addressed students, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices as they approach major milestones in the school year.
“It’s very important for us and our school community that you get this lesson with Spring Break and prom season approaching,” Smith told students. “You want to make the best decision, because this is something we never want to see,” he said, pointing to the crash reenactment scene.
Students also heard from a special guest speaker representing Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), who shared a personal message about the devastating impact impaired driving can have on families and communities.
Operation Safe & Sober is part of East Lake High School’s ongoing commitment to student safety and community awareness, helping ensure that young drivers understand the responsibility that comes with being on the road.
